It's All in the Wrist
- Move on to the next song(s) in your exercise pages after Mary had a Little Lamb.
- Make sure both your picking and your strumming motions are primarily wrist twist/rotation/flick movements, with any arm or finger movements being only supplementary to that.
- Whoever is playing rhythm should stick to consistent patterns (all quarter notes, for example) from now on, rather than following the rhythm of the melody as we had done before.
- Make sure to fret your chords and notes with the correct fingers to avoid unnecessary motion and to increase your left hand confidence to move by feel.
- Make sure not to create any unnecessary tension in your hands and avoid any other form issues we've identified for each of you. Self-monitoring is important, but you can also help keep track of these things for each other to make sure you stay on track and are aware of your form.
- Always practice with the metronome!
- Remember to continue to sing the melody whenever you practice one, and to sing loudly.
Getting Better All the Time
- Practice in chunks using the Rule of Five.
- Sing loud!
- Practice chord transitions, think about the most efficient way to move between each chord.
- Work from Jingle Bells on in your exercises.
- Make 2-3 new chord progressions using chords you have trouble with.
- Switch up tempos occasionally to make sure you're still listening.
The Joy of Singing
- Make sure to practice in the same way that we do lessons as much as possible. Always practice to the metronome, practice together as much as possible, always sing while practicing a melody part, etc...
- Make sure that you are singing nice and loud and trying to match the notes you're playing while you're practicing or playing any melody parts.
- Keep working through your practice songs going forward from Mary had a Little Lamb.
Nick's So Riiiiight!
- Start off with Mary Had a Little Lamb and work your way through the next songs as you progress.
- Sing loud, mouth open wide, focus on round mouth shapes, try to engage diaphragm.
- Don't move hand when playing melody.
- Use finger #3 for high G when not going for high A.
- Four fingers four frets.
