Slow is Smooth

  1. Make sure to practice with the metronome (counting and singing) no faster than 60 BPM. If you have any difficulties, slow the tempo further as your first solution to attempt.

  2. Move on to page 33 and on.

  3. Move on when done with exercise.

  4. Work from the book out. Make sure to keep singing and counting in from the ground level.

  5. Try to get page back into commenting.

  6. Focus on plucking feel of contact and catching fingertip flesh.

  7. Focus on crispness and pleasure of nailing check in beats.

Merry New Year

  1. First identify and process a 2 measure chunk, then play the chunk from memory a few times while singing with a strong emphasis on accuracy and quality rather than pace. Lastly, turn on the metronome and rep the chunk while singing the count using the Rule of Five (where you need 5 consecutive reps with no mistakes before you move one). Rinse and repeat from here, then combine chunks when you have 2 finished and Rule of Five those, building up in this way until the whole piece is completed.

  2. Keep going to where you plan to end in spite of mistakes. Make sure you’re practicing to keep going and deal with mistakes rather than just stopping.

  3. Work from 18 and on.

  4. Dig in for max power.

  5. “swing on the vine”

  6. Keep thumb flat.

First Day! (Updated)

  1. Work on pages below. (New pages below old ones)

  2. Practice in chunks of 2 measures.

  3. Read the chunk and immediately internalize and memorize it by playing slowly without the metronome.

  4. Once comfortable, rep that same chunk using the Rule of Five to the metronome at 60 bpm while counting and singing.

  5. Move on to the next chunk once you can successfully play the current one 5 times consecutively without mistakes.

  6. Once you have more than one chunk finished you can start to put them together in pairs and rep again using the Rule of Five.

  7. Continue this process until the exercise or song is complete.
